You went to the initial audition. You were energetic and focused. You looked great, you felt great and you know you killed it. Then, you get the callback and you really want to land this part because you’re excited about it and you know you’re perfect for the role. So how do you insure that you give the best possible callback you can? So much of casting and auditioning is out of our control, but there are some sure things we can do to be as prepared as possible.
-
Confidence
Walk into the room as if you’ve already gotten the part. You deserve to be in the room. Know it. Own it. Have fun. Remember that you got a callback for a reason.
-
Read the entire play
Sometimes during an audition, a director may ask you what you thought of the play or your opinions about a character’s journey. If you’re able to read the entire play, do so. This will also help you to have insights that would have been lost otherwise.
-
Be Open To Taking Adjustments
Being spontaneous and open is a huge part of what callbacks are about. Are you able to take direction? You may be asked to take the scene in a completely different way. Go with it.
-
Be On Time
Being early is being on time. If you’re reading with another actor, you want to have some time to prepare your scene together. Also, being late for an audition or a callback is just bad form and unprofessional. If you are going to be late, be sure to give the casting director a call or text.
-
Don’t Change Anything
You were chosen to come back based on what you did in the initial audition. Unless you are asked to change something before the callback, you should stick to what you’ve prepared. If it isn’t broken, you don’t need to fix it. Also, wear similar clothing if not the same outfit you wore when you auditioned.
-
Be nice to everyone
It’s a small community and word gets around. If you’re rude with the director or the assistant(s), people will find out and it will make it much more difficult to land a job. BE COURTEOUS. BE PATIENT. BE KIND.
-
Be ready to Cold Read
The director may wish to have you read for an entirely different part. Be prepared to make some quick choices and commit to them. Go with the flow and try to have fun.
-
When You’re Done, Let it Go
Don’t spend hours beating yourself up for a mistake or questioning whether or not you should’ve gone to law school. You did your best and that’s all you can do. It’s out of your control now, so let it go.
