Learning to navigate the “business” and demystify the actor-agent relationship is much of what I teach every Winter to BFA Seniors at the Theatre School at DePaul University. This year the students were assigned to interview the agents. Two students visited each Chicago SAG-AFTRA franchised agency and asked them questions about their agencies, audition advice and marketing for actors. Not only were the agents generous with their time, they also shared their advice. Here the Theatre School students share quotes garnered from the interviews on marketing yourself.

“Be sure to change your hair, dress, makeup, etc. to reflect your “film life” and to recognize that there is a difference between your film self and real life self. In addition to training, headshots are the most important thing you can invest money into. They’re usually the first thing someone sees and you want it to sell you well.” ~ Maryann Ziesch
“You and your agent need to develop a communicative and open relationship. This is essential for career development and for marketing yourself. It’s a team effort, built on effective communication including updates to your agent about current projects, classes, tours etc. Remember to always have both a theatrical and a commercial headshot at the ready, and continue to build your craft. Taking classes shows that you are growing and proves that you’re always working hard on perfecting your skills. Casting Directors need to see your passion and commitment whether that be through bookings or continued education!” ~ Victoria Borda
“Always go above and beyond, which leaves a lasting impression, and makes you memorable. No one ever says ‘no’ to donuts during an audition! Also, make sure your headshot is the best it can possibly be.” ~ Brett Seachrist
“No one can take you seriously if you don’t invest in a good headshot. Work on independent projects, work in theatre and let people know about it. You’re more marketable when you’re working on projects. Find out what your niche is. Figure out your uniqueness and be authentically yourself.” ~ Michelle Hayes
“Embrace yourself and your individuality and let it show in your work. Owning yourself is the most marketable thing you can do. And always remember that your headshot should be a representation of the person walking through the door. It should always look like who you are.” ~ Mike Theisen
“BE A PERSON. Be nice to everyone, be prepared and on time. Always do your work and be reliable. You want to be able to walk into any room and carry a conversation. Just be you, because ultimately, that’s what you’re marketing.” ~ Bob Schroeder, Donna Simon & Jess Jones
“It’s incredibly important that actors continue their training (on camera classes, improv training, etc.). The package you’re trying to sell is you. Make sure to tighten up the package, but leave room to stretch. In this collaborative industry it’s important to work for others, while continuing to pursue your own artistic ambitions. This creates a symbiotic relationship where the work that you do for others, leads to more opportunities, and these opportunities ultimately offer you a chance to grow as an artist.” ~ Deven Hartley
“You can believe in talent and art, but you also need to understand the business side of things. Finding balance is crucial. Marketing yourself means having a great headshot and an actor’s reel you can feel proud of.” ~ Erica Cruz
“You are different from every other actor on earth…..so be the best version of you. Over prepare for your audition, approach your material with as much of YOU as possible (within the the characters parameters) and walk in the room trusting your instincts. Your brand, the thing that makes you different is YOU….authentic, prepared, professional and human.” ~Sam Samuelson
There are a few points that all agents agree on:
- Over prepare.
- Get a killer headshot.
- Bring your most positive attitude.
- Use and embrace your human/authentic self.
